Learn Brush Lettering is a very inspiring course brought to you by two incredibly talented artists, Carla Hackett and Barbara Enright. The two ladies have a lot of lettering experience between them. Carla has worked on a number of client projects creating work for Tiffany & Co. and Campaign Monitor to name just a couple, she also makes up one quarter of the hand lettering group ‘The Letterettes’. Barbara has worked on show card and ticket writing since the 1960’s and had a successful sign business for quite some time.
I recently interviewed sign painter Ged Palmer who creates a lot of lettering with brushes and his work really got my curiosity going. I’ve experimented a fair bit with brush pens, but there is a big learning curve between using brush pens and brushes. What I really love about this course is the fact that you get sent a professional sable brush to your home, which is specifically designed for brush lettering / sign painting. It’s the same brush that’s used throughout the instructional videos in the course, so you know you’ll have the right tool!
As you work your way through the lessons there is always a little Q&A pop up in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. You just click / tap it and can ask any questions you might have or leave a comment. It never gets in the way of the lesson content and it means you never have to leave a lesson to ask a question! A few lettering courses I’ve seen online just sell you the content and leave you to get on with things without support or conversation, this course does not do that, I felt personally welcomed.
The course also includes 35 downloadable PDF’s which help to reinforce what you’ve learnt in the course videos and aid your practice. These are easy to access from each lesson, and can be re-downloaded any time you want.
On top of all the lessons, the sable brush sent out, the flow of asking questions and the downloadable PDF’s, there is also a private Facebook group which you can join to get personalised feedback from both Barbara and Carla.
There’s so much value in this course I almost forgot to mention if you’re left handed this course does not exclude you, as both Barbara and Carla are left handed. Techniques get demonstrated from both a right and left hand perspective, so both lefties and righties are welcome!
