If you’re looking to get started with sign painting ‘The Primers’ film series might just be the thing for you. At present a trailer and the first episode have recently been released, and the next episode is coming soon.
The series has been made possible through a collaboration between Mike Meyer, Better Letters, and A.S Handover. Mike Meyer is an American lettering artist who has been lettering for quite some time, and has developed a great depth of knowledge and a high level of skill within the area of sign painting. Better Letters run by Sam Roberts organises lettering events, workshops and more. A.S Handover craft and supply professional brushes and also supply other helpful tools too. These three make a really diverse combination, and have worked hard to bring you something both inspiring and helpful.
Mike demonstrates the basics of sign painting in short films which make up the series. The episodes are designed to either be a great starting point for beginners, or to be used as an additional resource to reinforce skills learnt during Better Letters / Mike Meyer workshops available. If you’re interested in one of their workshops they are available worldwide and a detailed schedule can be found on Better Letters.
Episode One – Layout
In the first episode Mike talks about layout and a couple of different ways you can transfer your designs ready to paint them. Although only just under eight minutes long this episode taught me a couple of things I had no previous knowledge on, and introduced a new lettering tool to me. These episodes won’t take up much of your time to watch, but will arm you with enough to experiment with and will teach you some lettering terminology. So providing you put the practice in you can probably get quite far alone with just this series!
Where to Watch
You can find the first episode and the next episodes when they are released on both the Better Letters website or the A.S Handover YouTube channel. I’m really excited to see the second episode and I hope after watching the first you are too!
