‘Creative Lettering And Beyond – Inspiring Tips, Techniques & Ideas For Hand Lettering Your Way To Beautiful Works Of Art’ is the first book to be featured in Lettering Tutorials Book Club.
For those that didn’t catch the intro to Book Club, it’s a feature where I’ll recommend the hand lettering books that I’ve found very helpful or inspiring, and also feature the books that you recommend too!
‘Creative Lettering And Beyond’ seems like a good book to start the club off with as it covers a bit of almost everything.
The book authored by Gabri Joy Kirkendall, Laura Lavender, Julie Manwaring and Shauna Lynn Panezyszyn is split into four main sections of lettering. These include modern calligraphy, illustrated lettering, chalk lettering and lettering crafts. Each author has their own specialist area, so each section has been written and presented with a good level of knowledge and experience. After time and practice most lettering artists will normally have an area of hand lettering that they are more skilled in, they will still have knowledge and skills in other areas, but they may not be as advanced. So using a group of authors that all specialise in different types of lettering is clever!
I purchased this book quite early on into my lettering journey, and as pretty much a complete beginner at the time ‘Creative Lettering And Beyond’ gave me a few helpful tips. Content in the book is often presented in a step by step manner, so you can understand how to follow the techniques mentioned. The steps are also detailed (but not lengthy), so you’re unlikely to get lost at any point. The book also contains pages that you can practice on, although I’ve never personally used those pages as I like to keep my books tidy. If you’re not keen on marking or writing in a book like me, and want to practice some of the techniques in the book, you can always get my free printable practice lettering guides by entering in your details below.
The book isn’t too hard to come by, you can get it here from Amazon, it’s also available from most major bookstores too, such as Barnes and Noble in the US along with Waterstones and WH Smith in the UK. Please note the Amazon link is an affiliate one, so if you do end up purchasing ‘Creative Lettering And Beyond – Inspiring Tips, Techniques & Ideas For Hand Lettering Your Way To Beautiful Works Of Art’, at no extra cost to you I could earn a little from Amazon.
