Book Club brings you a new recommendation ‘Scripts: Elegant Lettering From Design’s Golden Age’. This months book is another that I have in my collection, and it’s one I go to so often. Created by Steven Heller and Louise Fili the book is filled with beautiful and interesting samples of script lettering. This isn’t the kind of book that will talk you through how to script letter but it will provide you with endless pages of script lettering that you can use as reference.
The book contains many different types of script, from many different eras and from all over the world. You can find samples of old advertisements, samples of entire alphabets written in script, hand lettered scripts and scripts written using calligraphy. Towards the very back of the book there are some examples of vintage logos incorporating script lettering, and even examples of cross stitched letters sewn in a script style.
If you’re wondering why ‘Scripts: Elegant Lettering From Design’s Golden Age’ is one of my go to books, there are two reasons. Firstly because the book is full of so many different types of script lettering, it is an excellent reference resource for almost any kind of script project you might be working on. The second reason is because the book can still help you to learn how to letter in a script style. I’ve talked more about this in ‘Brush Lettering For Beginners Part One’ and ‘Brush Lettering For Beginners Part Two: Techniques’. I highlight that you can try and practice the styles of the lettering you see in the book for your own personal development. Doing so can help you to master different styles of script, and will make knowing where to use thick and thin pen or brush strokes a little more easier. Just keep in mind if you do try to practice any of the styles in the book you shouldn’t share them. You should only ever mirror others lettering work for your own personal development, unless you have the persons explicit permission to do otherwise.
